Wichita In Mind (WIM) is a collaboration of leaders from three local universities, public schools, early childhood education, social services, and area businesses. The program utilizes a city-system approach to change the culture of our community by creating a legacy of personal awareness and civic engagement. Our mission is to make Wichita a learning community for mindful living. Inspired by the book, A Mindful Nation, by Congressman Tim Ryan, we are successfully testing a series of initiatives addressing five key community constituencies —Veterans, Children, Teachers, Healthcare workers and Leaders.
Over the course of our lives we learn to care for the things that matter most. When something is broken, we fix it. When something needs tending to, we tend to it. These things are true of our homes and cars and bodies, but what about our minds? So many people are willing to surrender to the idea that the human brain goes bad. Like passengers at a bus stop, they stand idly by, waiting for the inevitable deterioration of age and time. We are not those people.
Every year, our knowledge from psychology, mental health, and cognitive and behavioral neuroscience about what helps people be healthy and content converges more and more with ancient wisdom traditions and contemplative practices. Alongside these advances, a movement for mindful living has grown among the nation’s media and cultural elite.
